Things to Know:

How to winterize your household

Winter is something that is not often had around here (TEXAS), but when we get it, we got it good.  Many households have all the necessary options, but unless installed correctly it becomes useless.

Ways to know you have the necessary options:

        All pipes are properly insulated.

Shutoff valve in valve box installed on customer side of water meter.

Drain off faucets installed inside the valve box outside (i.e. stop & waste valve used for shutoff  valve).

The process is simple:  Shut off valve inside valve box.  Open faucets installed by plumber inside valve box (if there is a stop and waste, there will not be a faucet for cold water).  Open all fixtures inside home (hot and cold) and flush all water closets (note: pouring antifreeze in tank and bowl will help if left unoccupied for a long period of time).  All the water inside all pipes should now drain back into valve box outside.  Also remember to disconnect all water hoses on outside faucets and open them.  Now you should be ready for the brutal winter.
